Disease Report

REPORT DUE DATE: ___________

PURPOSE: Write an article for a science journal to inform the general public about a disease. 

CONTENT: The report will be written in narrative form and will be a detailed and complete discussion of the disease chosen. It will include, but not be limited to, the following major topics: EACH WORTH 20 POINTS.

o   Brief history of the disease and its effect on human populations. Statistics and graphs may be included as appropriate.

o   Symptoms and signs of the disease and effect of the disease on the anatomy and physiology of the patient. Include which body systems are affected and how the disease progresses from onset to cure or mortality.

o   Diagnosis of the disease. How does the doctor determine if you have the disease? Include laboratory tests that might be done.

o   Describe treatment for this disease. Include medications, physical therapy or CAM treatment.

o   Prevention of the spread of the disease. Include measures that might be taken to prevent the spread of the disease to others. Include global distribution maps where appropriate.

o   Predisposing conditions for this disease. Describe the group of people most at risk for contracting this disease. Does it affect males or females or both, young or old, black or white, immune compromised, etc…  Include graphs or statistics where appropriate.

o   Transmission of the disease, i.e., specifically, how does it enter the human population from a host in nature (animal, insect, etc…) AND how is it transmitted from person to person.

o   Picture of the causative organism. For example, photomicrograph of a bacteria, virus, parasite, fungus, etc…

o   Treatment or therapy for the disease. Be comprehensive and specific.

o   Prognosis for patients with this disease. This means what is the probable outcome of having this disease. Include statistical data where necessary. Mortality rates should be included.

FORMAT:               References 30 points                                    Proper formatting 30 points

·         The article must be typed with standard margins, double-spaced, and size 12 font.

·         The first page will be a title page with the name of the disease centered and your name, class period and date at the bottom center of the page.

·         Graphs, statistical charts, global maps must be on separate pages and referenced in the body of the article.

·         The picture of the causative organism should be on a separate page at the end of your article.

·         References cited should be on a separate page immediately following the body of your article. Use MLA format.

·         A hard copy of the report must be submitted. No flash drives or email submissions accepted.

 

RESOURCES:

·         Three book or periodical resources must be used and properly cited using MLA style.

·         Additional resources are encouraged and should be cited as well.

·         Encyclopedias may be used for a general survey reference but WILL NOT COUNT AS ONE OF THE THREE REQUIRED RESOURCES.

·         Plagiarism will result in NO CREDIT for this report.

GRADING:

·         There is NO minimum number of pages or words required.

·         The report must, however, thoroughly cover the topics outlined in CONTENT which are worth 20 points each for a total of 200 points.

·         Three properly cited resources count 10 points each for a total of 30 points.

·         Proper and complete formatting of a hard copy report is worth 20 points.

·        Total points for this article are 260.

·        Diseases will be picked randomly from a group provided by the teacher. No other diseases may be used for this article  without permission from the teacher.
